📐 Inside Mount — Measuring Guide
First — Check Your Depth
Let's make sure an inside mount will work for your window! Using a metal tape measure, measure inside the window opening from the back of the window to the front of the opening where the shade would mount. To mount the brackets, the depth at the top of the window must be at least 1 1/2" for standard installation. To have a flush mount (meaning the shade is fully recessed in the window opening) the depth must be at least 3 3/4" — otherwise it will slightly stick out, which does not necessarily look bad; it is more of a personal taste preference. If your depth is not sufficient for mounting the brackets, please click Back to see our outside mount instructions or consider a different product.
Width
Measure inside the window opening/frame from left to right at the top of the opening to the nearest 1/8". If rounding is necessary, round down to the nearest 1/8". That is your ordering width.
Height
Measure the inside of the window opening/frame from the top of the opening to the bottom of the opening/sill to the nearest 1/4" in three places: on the left-hand side, the middle, and on the right-hand side. Write down all 3 measurements and circle the tallest. That is your ordering height. For Zebra Shades, if more than one window is on the same wall close to each other, make sure to select the same height on all windows (the tallest height out of the combined windows) sharing the same wall — this ensures the zebra bands align aesthetically.
Note
Always provide the actual measurement of the window opening. We will make the necessary deduction of approximately 1/5" to the width of the top of the shade to accommodate the installation brackets.
The fabric portion of the shade will be approximately 1" to 1 7/16" narrower than the ordered width (up to 3/4" gap on each side between the window opening and the edge of the fabric) depending on the lift option. When maximum light blocking is needed, consider adding side channels or an outside mount for optimal blackout, or choose an alternate product. No deductions will be made to the ordered height.
📐 Wide & Sliding Windows — Multiple Blinds & Post Measurements
Windows 110" or wider cannot be covered by a single blind and must be split into two or more shades mounted side by side in the same opening. Use the post measurement method below to determine the correct width for each blind.
Standard Wide Windows (side-by-side blinds)
Windows that open left and right to center will require left and right post measurements so that your shade aligns with the window openings. Measure from the left side of the inside mount frame to the first white window handle of the left window (where there is no glass) — that is your Left Post Measurement. Then measure from the left side of the inside mount frame all the way to the second post (the right window's white handle where there is no glass) — that is your Right Post Measurement. If your Left Post Measurement is noticeably shorter than your Right Post Measurement, you measured correctly.
Sliding Glass Doors & Windows
For sliding doors that open from the center where the left panel opens left and the right panel opens right: measure precisely from the left inside frame to the exact center of the door crease where the two panels meet — that is the width of your left blind. Then measure precisely from the right inside frame to the exact center of that same door crease — that is the width of your right blind.
⚠️ Note — Protruding Baseboard: If your sliding door has a protruding baseboard at the bottom that extends further out than the door frame, your width must be measured at the bottom of the opening, not the top. This applies to all sliding doors with protruding baseboards.
📐 Outside Mount — Measuring Guide
First — Check Your Space
Before you start measuring, decide where above your window opening you want to mount your shade. You will need at least 4" of flat vertical space above the window to mount the brackets. If you do not have sufficient vertical space, please click Back to see our inside mount instructions or consider a different product.
Width
Measure inside the window opening/frame from left to right at the top of the opening to the nearest 1/8". If rounding is necessary, round down to the nearest 1/8". That is your base inside measurement.
For outside mount, we recommend adding 2" on each side of the window opening (4" total) for optimal light blocking. Your ordered width will be the width of the cassette at the top of the shade. The fabric portion of the shade will be approximately 1" to 1 7/16" narrower than the ordered width (up to 3/4" gap on each side) depending on the lift option. If you wish to have the fabric cover a specific width, order slightly wider — just ensure you have enough horizontal space to mount the shade.
Height
Measure from where you plan to mount the brackets (typically 4" above the window opening, or matching your inside mount height) down to the bottom of the window opening/sill — or however far down you want the shade to drop — to the nearest 1/4" in three places: left side, middle, and right side.
Note
Always provide us with your actual desired coverage measurement. No deductions will be made to the ordered width or height for outside mount. When maximum light blocking is needed, outside mount with the recommended 2" overlap on each side (4" total) provides significantly better coverage than inside mount.
Above the Trim
Width: Decide what area you'd like to cover — we recommend extending 2–3" on each side of the window opening for best light control. Measure left to right including your desired overhang. That is your ordering width.
Height: Mount at least at the minimum vertical space referenced above (the shade doesn't need to be high since the fabric spools onto the roll). Measure from the top of where you'll mount down to where you want the bottom of the shade, using the same extra space below the opening as above — or to the bottom edge of the trim if you prefer. If you have a protruding sill, measure to the top of the sill. That is your ordering height.
Note: If your trim is more than 1/2" thick, consider adding shims under the brackets for additional clearance, as the fabric may rub against the trim when operating.
On the Trim
Width: We don't normally recommend mounting Zebra Shades directly on trim unless no other placement works — the fabric will be narrower than the ordered width and won't reach the trim edges, while the cassette will extend beyond them. Confirm your trim height meets the minimum bracket requirement, then measure outer edge to outer edge of the trim at the top of the window. That is your ordering width.
Height: Measure from the top of the trim to the bottom of the trim, or to the top of the sill if protruding. That is your ordering height.
📐 Inside Mount — Measuring Guide
First — Check Your Depth
Let's make sure an inside mount will work for your window! Using a metal tape measure, measure inside the window opening from the back of the window to the front of the opening where the shade would mount. The depth at the top of the window must be at least 1 1/4" for Cordless and 3/4" for Continuous Cord Loop and Motorized to mount the brackets. To have a flush mount (meaning the shade is fully recessed) the depth must be at least 2 1/4" for Cordless and 2 1/8" for Continuous Cord Loop and Motorized — otherwise it will slightly stick out, which does not necessarily look bad; it is more of a personal taste preference. If your depth is not sufficient, please see our outside mount instructions or consider a different product.
Width
Measure inside the window opening/frame from left to right to the nearest 1/8" at three places: the top, the middle, and the bottom of the opening. Write down all 3 measurements and circle the narrowest. If rounding is necessary, round down to the nearest 1/8". That is your ordering width.
Height
Measure inside the window opening/frame from the top of the opening to the bottom of the opening/sill to the nearest 1/8" in three places: left side, middle, and right side. Write down all 3 measurements and circle the tallest. That is your ordering height.
Note
Always provide the actual measurement of the window opening. We will make the necessary deduction of approximately 1/4" to your shade's headrail and 3/8" to the fabric width to allow room for installation and proper movement. No deductions will be made to your height.

You will need at least 1" of flat vertical space for Safelock Cordless and 1 1/2" for Continuous Cord Loop and Motorized above the window to mount the brackets. The shade can be installed directly above the window opening or higher to give the appearance of a larger window. If you do not have sufficient vertical space, please see our inside mount instructions or consider a different product.
If you have trim around the window, you can mount above the trim, directly on the trim (if you have the required flat space), or to the sides of the trim. Choose your scenario below.
Above the Window (No Trim)
Width: Decide what area you'd like to cover — we recommend extending about 2" on each side of the window opening. Measure left to right including your desired extra space. That is your ordering width.
Height: Measure from the top of where you'll mount the shade down to where you want the bottom to rest (using the same extra space below the opening as above). If you have a protruding sill, measure to the top of the sill. That is your ordering height.
Above the Trim
Width: We recommend extending about 2" on each side of the trim (or match the trim width). Measure left to right including any desired overhang. That is your ordering width.
Height: Measure from the top of where you'll mount the shade down to the bottom edge of the trim (or to the top of the sill if you have a protruding sill). That is your ordering height.
Note: Complimentary spacer blocks available on request — adds 3/8" of depth behind brackets to keep the shade away from the frame.
On the Trim
Width: Confirm the trim height meets the minimum bracket requirement. Measure from outer edge to outer edge of the trim at the top of the window. That is your ordering width.
Height: Measure from the top of the trim to the bottom of the trim (or to the top of the sill if you have a protruding sill). That is your ordering height.
Door Mount
Width: Measure left to right from the outer edge of the trim piece around the glass to the other outer edge. That is your ordering width. For better light control, order about 2" wider if space allows.
Height: Measure from where you'll mount above the glass trim piece down to where you want the bottom of the shade. That is your ordering height.

Height
Measure from where you plan to mount the brackets (typically 4" above the window opening) down to the bottom of the window opening/sill — or however far down you want the shade to drop — to the nearest 1/4" in three places: left side, middle, and right side. Write down all 3 measurements and circle the tallest. That is your ordering height. For Butterfly Shades, if more than one window is on the same wall close to each other, make sure to select the same height on all windows (the tallest height out of the combined windows) sharing the same wall — this ensures the fabric bands align aesthetically.
Note
Always provide us with your actual desired coverage measurement. No deductions will be made to the ordered width or height for outside mount. When maximum light blocking is needed, outside mount with the recommended 2" overlap on each side (4" total) provides significantly better coverage than inside mount.
Above the Trim
Width: We recommend extending 2–3" on each side of the window opening for best light control. Measure left to right including your desired overhang. That is your ordering width.
Height: Measure from the top of where you'll mount down to where you want the bottom of the shade, using the same extra space below the opening as above — or to the bottom edge of the trim if you prefer. If you have a protruding sill, measure to the top of the sill. That is your ordering height.
Note: If your trim is more than 1/2" thick, consider adding shims under the brackets for additional clearance.
On the Trim
Width: We don't normally recommend mounting Butterfly Shades directly on trim unless no other placement works — the fabric will be narrower than the ordered width and won't reach the trim edges, while the cassette will extend beyond them.
The depth at the top of the window must be at least 2 1/4" for shades without a cassette valance and 2 5/8" for shades with a cassette valance to mount the brackets. To have a flush mount (meaning the shade is fully recessed) the depth must be at least 3" without a cassette valance and 3 1/2" with a cassette valance — otherwise it will slightly stick out, which does not necessarily look bad; it is more of a personal taste preference. If your depth is not sufficient, please see our outside mount instructions or consider a different product.
Width
Measure inside the window opening/frame from left to right at the top of the opening to the nearest 1/8". If rounding is necessary, round down to the nearest 1/8". That is your ordering width.
We will make the necessary deduction of approximately 1/8" to the width of the shade to accommodate the installation brackets. The fabric portion of the shade will be approximately 1" – 1 1/2" narrower than the ordered width (up to 3/4" gap on each side). When maximum light blocking is needed, consider adding side channels, an outside mount, or an alternate product.
You will need at least 1 1/2" of flat vertical space above the window to mount the brackets for shades without a cassette valance, or at least 2" for shades with a cassette valance. If you do not have sufficient vertical space, please see our inside mount instructions or consider a different product.
Your ordered width will be the "tip to tip" measurement — the widest part of the top of the shade including brackets and cassette valance (if applicable). The fabric portion of the shade will be approximately 1" – 1 1/2" narrower than the ordered width (up to 3/4" on each side). If you wish to have the fabric cover a specific width, order slightly wider — just ensure you have enough horizontal space to mount the shade.
Above the Window (No Trim)
Width: We recommend extending 2" on each side of the window opening (4" total) for optimal light blocking. Measure left to right including your desired extra space. That is your ordering width.
Height: Mount at least 4" above the window opening (the shade doesn't need to be higher since the fabric spools onto the roll). Measure from the top of where you'll mount down to where you want the bottom of the shade, using the same extra space below the opening as above. If you have a protruding sill, measure to the top of the sill. That is your ordering height.

Note: If your trim is more than 1/2" thick, consider adding shims under the brackets for clearance. If your trim is 3/4" or thicker, we recommend the reverse roll option.
On the Trim
Width: We don't normally recommend mounting roller shades directly on trim unless no other placement works — the fabric will be narrower than the ordered width and won't reach the trim edges. Confirm your trim height meets the minimum bracket requirement, then measure outer edge to outer edge of the trim at the top of the window. That is your ordering width.
Height: Measure from the top of the trim to the bottom of the trim, or to the top of the sill if protruding. That is your ordering height.
Door Mount
Width: Measure left to right from the outer edge of the trim piece around the glass to the other outer edge. That is your ordering width. For better light control, order about 2–3" wider if space allows.
Height: Mount at least at the minimum vertical space above the glass trim piece. Measure down to where you want the bottom of the shade, using the same extra space below the trim piece as above. That is your ordering height.

Height
Measure inside the window opening/frame from the top of the opening to the bottom of the opening/sill to the nearest 1/8" in three places: left side, middle, and right side. Write down all 3 measurements and circle the shortest. That is your ordering height.
Note
Always provide the actual measurement of the window opening. We will make the necessary deduction of approximately 1/4" to your blind's width and 1/2" to your blind's height to allow room for installation and proper movement within the window opening.
📐 Outside Mount — Measuring Guide
First — Check Your Space
Before you start measuring, decide where above your window opening you want to mount your blind. You will need at least 2" of flat vertical space above the window to mount the brackets. The blind can be installed directly above the window opening or higher to give the appearance of a larger window. If you have trim, you can mount above it, directly on it, or to the sides. If you do not have sufficient vertical space, please see our inside mount instructions or consider a different product.
Above the Window (No Trim)
Width: We recommend extending 3" on each side of the window opening for best light control. Measure left to right including your desired extra space. That is your ordering width.
Height: Mount at least at the minimum vertical space referenced above. Measure from the top of where you'll mount down to where you want the bottom of the blind. If the blind will extend to the floor, leave 1" of space above the floor. If you have a protruding sill, measure down to at least 1/4" above the top of the sill so the blind has room to move. That is your ordering height.
Above the Trim
Width: We recommend extending 3" on each side of the window opening (or match the trim width). Measure left to right including your desired overhang. That is your ordering width.
Height: Measure from the top of where you'll mount down to where you want the bottom of the blind. If extending to the floor, leave 1" of space above the floor. If you have a protruding sill, measure down to at least 1/4" above the top of the sill. That is your ordering height.

📐 Inside Mount — Measuring Guide
First — Check Your Depth
Let's make sure an inside mount will work for your window! Using a metal tape measure, measure inside the window opening from the back of the window to the front of the opening where the shade would mount. The dual roller cassette requires a minimum depth of 5 1/8" (130mm) and a minimum height clearance of 5 1/8" (130mm) above the glass to mount the brackets. Unlike single roller shades, the dual cassette is large and will not recess flush into most standard window openings — if your depth is not sufficient, please see our outside mount instructions or consider a different product.
Width
Measure inside the window opening/frame from left to right at the top of the opening to the nearest 1/8". If rounding is necessary, round down to the nearest 1/8". That is your ordering width.
We will make the necessary deduction of approximately 1/8" to the width of the shade to accommodate the installation brackets. When maximum light blocking is needed, consider an outside mount or an alternate product. No deductions will be made to the ordered height.
If you selected a Zebra + Roller or Zebra + Shangri-La combination and have more than one window on the same wall close to each other, make sure to select the same height on all windows (the tallest height out of the combined windows) — this ensures the Zebra bands align aesthetically across windows.

How to Measure — Wide & Sliding Windows
Windows 110" or wider cannot be covered by a single blind and must be split into two or more shades mounted side by side in the same opening.
